Note: This article is meant for first time users or current users who would like to install Box onto their computers.
Box is a cloud storage system for collaborating, sharing, and storing documents. It is one of many cloud storage services, like Dropbox, Onedrive, Google Drive, etc., but stands out for its "File Request" feature (You can find our article on how to use it here: https://helpdesk.uww.umass.edu/hc/en-us/articles/360046101071-File-Requesting-in-Box). There are two programs you can install to start using this system, Box Drive or Box Tools.
To more easily work with files natively from your computer, you will need to install Box Drive.
You do not need administrative permissions to install or use these programs.
The Difference Between Box Drive and Box Tools:
- Box Tools allows you to open files from within the web browser using a default application like Word, Excel, or Acrobat, and save them directly into box.
- Box Drive allows you to open and work with files in a folder similar to as if they are directly on your computer. Box Drive has essentially replaced Box Sync (Box Drive uses less space on your hard drive).
Installing Box Tools(Recommended):
